Gemini, is stepping up its game in Gmail by automatically summarizing lengthy emails and threads. This new feature, known as “email summary cards,” appears at the top of emails, providing key points without requiring any user interaction. Previously, users had to manually request summaries, but now Gemini proactively generates them for longer conversations or messages with multiple replies. These summaries are continuously updated as new messages arrive.
The feature is currently available for English-language emails on mobile devices and may take up to two weeks to roll out to users. There’s no official word on when it will be available on desktop versions or for non-paid Gmail users. Users can still manually request summaries or disable all AI features entirely by turning off “Smart features” in Gmail settings.
While this automation aims to enhance productivity, it’s important to note that AI-generated summaries aren’t always perfect. Google’s own AI Overviews feature for Search has previously offered poor quality and inaccurate information at times. Therefore, users should be cautious and verify the summaries, especially for critical communications.
This update reflects Google’s broader push to integrate AI into its services, making tools like Gemini more proactive in assisting users with managing their digital communications.
